Volleyball Recruiting Game Plan
Sophomores • Juniors • Seniors | NCAA Registration, Recruiting, and College Coach Communication
The goal is to help each volleyball player develop a clear recruiting plan, understand NCAA eligibility requirements, create a recruiting profile, communicate with college coaches, and identify the right academic and athletic opportunities.
Wizard Volleyball Academy players, I recommend treating recruiting as a year-round process with specific monthly goals, rather than waiting for tournament season or senior year.
1. The recruiting roadmap at a glance
Sophomore year — Build the foundation
Discover and prepare
- Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center when appropriate.
- Build a volleyball recruiting résumé and highlight video.
- Research colleges by academics, volleyball level, location, and affordability.
- Attend camps and showcase events strategically.
- Develop measurable athletic goals and maintain strong grades.
Junior year — Get recruited
Engage and evaluate
- Complete eligibility and academic planning.
- Email college coaches with video, schedule, and academic information.
- Attend targeted camps, tournaments, and campus visits.
- Track coach responses and follow up professionally.
- Compare roster needs and realistic playing opportunities.
Senior year — Finalize the opportunity
Verify and commit
- Follow up with programs still recruiting your position.
- Complete remaining eligibility and amateurism requirements.
- Review admissions, scholarships, financial aid, and roster opportunities.
- Confirm all deadlines, offer terms, and next steps in writing.
- Maintain grades and finish the season with a strong attitude.
Important: NCAA recruiting rules vary by division, sport, recruiting activity, and date. Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior colleges do not all follow the same process. NCAA Eligibility Center registration is not the same as being recruited or being admitted to a college.
2. NCAA Eligibility Center: step-by-step registration
Official website: NCAA Eligibility Center — Create an account.
1 Choose the correct account
- Division I or II prospects: generally select the Academic and Athletics Certification account.
- Domestic Division III prospects who are exploring options: the free Profile Page account is generally appropriate.
- International students and certain transfer students have different requirements. Check the official registration guidance before selecting an account.

2 Create your account
Have ready:
- Legal name and date of birth.
- A permanent email address you can access after graduation.
- Current high school and complete education history.
- Expected graduation date.
- Volleyball participation history and other requested information.
3 Complete registration
Follow the prompts, pay the applicable registration fee or request a fee waiver if eligible, and save your NCAA ID. A partially completed account may not satisfy certification requirements.
4 Check academic eligibility
Ask your school counselor to verify that your courses appear on the school’s NCAA-approved core-course list. Track your core-course GPA and graduation progress.
- Division I generally requires 16 approved core-course credits and a minimum 2.3 core-course GPA.
- Division II generally requires 16 approved core-course credits and a minimum 2.2 core-course GPA.
Confirm the current rules for your intended enrollment year using the official NCAA eligibility requirements.
5 Submit records and monitor your account
Request transcripts from every applicable high school, respond to tasks in your NCAA account, and complete the required amateurism and certification steps. During senior year, follow the instructions for final certification and submission of your final transcript and proof of graduation.
Coach’s reminder: NCAA registration does not automatically make a player eligible. The Eligibility Center reviews the student’s records and determines certification status.
3. Sophomore recruiting plan — Grade 10
Primary objective: become academically prepared, identifiable to college coaches, and ready for meaningful recruiting conversations when permitted.
| Timeline | Required actions |
|---|---|
| August–September | Meet with the school counselor; review grades, core courses, position, height, and athletic strengths. Create a college-recruiting folder. |
| October–November | Build a volleyball résumé and start a highlight video. Research 20–30 colleges across different competitive levels. |
| December–January | Create or review the appropriate NCAA account. Complete college questionnaires and research camps that match your goals. |
| February–April | Film full matches and quality skill footage. Ask your club and school coaches for an honest evaluation of your current level. |
| May–July | Attend selected camps and recruiting events. Update film, contact information, academic information, and tournament schedules. |
Sophomore deliverables
- One-page athletic résumé.
- A concise highlight video plus full-match footage.
- A list of 20–30 prospective colleges.
- An academic progress report.
- An initial recruiting email and player profile.
- A plan for improving two or three specific volleyball skills.
Don’t measure success only by how many coaches email you. Measure progress by better film, stronger academics, improved performance, and a more informed college list.
4. Junior recruiting plan — Grade 11
Primary objective: turn preparation into active, targeted recruiting conversations.
| Timeline | Required actions |
|---|---|
| August–September | Update the résumé and film. Finalize a balanced list of reach, target, and likely-fit colleges. |
| October–December | Email college coaches individually, complete questionnaires, and track responses. Research admissions requirements and financial aid. |
| January–April | Send updated match footage and schedules. Follow up with interested programs and attend appropriate showcases or camps. |
| May–July | Reassess the college list, communicate updated schedules, and arrange visits when permitted. Respond promptly to genuine coach interest. |
Junior deliverables
- A focused college list of approximately 15–25 programs.
- Personalized outreach to coaches.
- Updated video showing the player’s current level.
- NCAA account and academic progress review.
- A tracker documenting coach contact, responses, next steps, visits, and roster needs.
